First things first: How to receive
only my English-language newsletterBy default, once you sign up, you’ll receive only the German-language posts. Now, if you’re keen on learnin’ German, that might be fun — you could even read Goethe, Schiller, or Thomas Mann in the original. But I reckon you’d rather get the newsletter in English. 😉
To receive only the English newsletter, you’ll need to adjust your settings. Just follow these steps:
Click on your Substack profile in the top right corner.
Go to “Manage subscriptions.”
Scroll down a bit to “Notifications.”
Choose which posts you want to receive by email.
👉 Make sure to manually check the box for “English”!
👉 And don’t forget to turn off the German-language posts. Click the “Food Revolution” button above the “English” one so it turns gray. That’s it — plain and simple.
Howdy!
Ever wondered where your food really comes from — and what folks mean when they talk about a food transition?
My name’s Juerg Vollmer, and I’ve been writin’ about farming and food since 2014. Up until 2024, I served as editor-in-chief of Europe’s oldest professional magazine for agriculture, founded back in 1864. Since April 2024, I’ve been publishin’ the “Food Revolution” newsletter as an independent agricultural journalist.
What’s the food revolution?
The food revolution (or transition) is the shift from an unhealthy, climate-damagin’ food system to one that’s healthier and easier on our resources. It puts more focus on plant-forward, regionally produced food — takin’ pressure off soils, the climate, and people alike.
I’ve visited countless family-run farms across Europe — as well as large-scale industrial farming operations in the U.S. and in the countries of the former Soviet Union. I’ve talked with researchers, producers, and policymakers, and I’ve seen firsthand just how much change is already underway.
That’s what I write about.
Independent. Fact-based. And with a clear point of view.
What’s the “Food Revolution” newsletter about?
Understandin’ the food transition — without bein’ talked down to.
I show:
how farming, food, and climate can be brought back into balance,
why industrial food may fill you up cheap, but costs us dearly in the long run,
which political and economic structures block change — or make it possible,
and how we, as consumers, can be part of that change.

What do you actually get with “Food Revolution”?
I won’t clog your inbox. You’ll get just one or two emails a month — a well-researched investigation or background piece on the food transition, clearly explained and journalistically grounded.
Facts that offer orientation, instead of addin’ to the noise.
On the ”Food Revolution” website, you can read all past newsletters in the archive.
The newsletter is free, ad-free, and fully independent.
I’d be glad if you’d subscribe to my newsletter — and don’t hesitate to chime in with your thoughts, whether they’re critical or kind.
